In this special investigation, ProPublica tells the gripping tale of Oscar Ramírez, a Guatemalan immigrant in Boston. Ramirez recently learned that as a toddler, he was adopted by a soldier who had overseen the killings of most of his biological family. The man who Ramírez had considered his father had helped to perpetrate a bloody massacre, in which soldiers wiped out most of Oscar’s home village. This moving story underscores the human impact of Guatemala’s civil war that lasted over three decades.
